Eternal Life

God uses tribulations in our lives to produce qualities in our life that will help us rejoice through anything.  We know that our tribulations help us with perseverance, which leads to proven character, which leads to hope.  Have you ever hoped for something, only to have your hope destroyed?  When that happens often enough in your life, you may give up hope.  You may no longer have any hope for anything.  Tribulations have a way of sapping hope, and taking it away.  At that point, you need Romans 5:1-5, more than ever. So, we will read the Word of God today to learn about the Holy Spirit’s action in our lives, and how the love of God will never disappoint us.

and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:5

Hope Does Not Disappoint.  In Romans 5:5, God has taught us that tribulations, when faced with great joy, bring about hope through the tribulation process. God develops our inner person through His power of justification at work during the tribulations.  Now, God tells us that particular hope, born through the tribulation process, does not disappoint. This word “disappoint” (“καταισχύνει“) means not to be put to shame, disappointed, or disillusioned.  In 1 Peter 2:6, Peter tells us that everyone who believes in Jesus will not be disappointed, even though many people have rejected Jesus. This same root word is also used in 1 Corinthians 11:4-5, to describe the disgrace that a man has while praying or prophesying with his head covered, and, just the opposite in the next verse, that the woman disgraces her head by praying or prophesying in the assembly with her head uncovered.  We may learn two lessons here. Our hope does not disappoint us before God. In Jesus, we will never be disappointed because our  faith rests upon the power of God and the word of God. Second, our hope will never wither in disgrace.  People tend to find reasons to live in shame and disgrace, but believers should actually live in peace under the power of justification and rejoice during the tribulation process. Our hope will never lead to disgrace because it comes from the love of God.

The Love of God.   Jesus says our hope will never disappoint us and then tells us why it will not disappoint us. Our hope will never disappoint us because it rests upon and is built upon the love of God. Our love of God, once and for all poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit given to us, causes this love to abound within our heart constantly. In other words, the Holy Spirit has filled the chambers of our hearts with God’s love, and it remains there constantly nourishing our hope in the glory of God. We look forward to the day of Christ’s appearing, when our hope shall be realized, and we see Christ. So consider today that the Holy Spirit lives in your heart. When He first took up residence within you on the day of your salvation by faith alone, then, at that moment, the Holy Spirit came to indwell you. He poured out (“ἐκκέχυτα“) God’s love into your heart. This term “poured out” occurs in Acts 2:33, to describe the Holy Spirit being poured out upon the believers at Pentecost, when He came down as cloven tongues of fire. Later in Acts 10:45, the Holy Spirit also was poured out upon the Gentiles, just like with the Jews.   The point is that the Holy Spirit, along with His abiding presence in your life, also poured out the love of God when He came into your life. He continually ministers in your life with the love of God, because God is love (“ἀγάπη“).  The Holy Spirit, by the power of justification and the power of love, will never disappoint you as you live in Him.

So we learn more about the Holy Spirit and the power of justification today.

    ●  The Holy Spirit came into your life the moment you believed that Jesus died for your sins, and rose from the dead, to live with you forever.  When you accepted God’s gift of forgiveness, then the Holy Spirit came to live within you.

    ●  When the Holy Spirit came to live within you, at that moment, the love of God was poured out in your heart.

   ●   The Holy Spirit of God ministers daily in your heart, using the love of God to sustain you and glorify God.  Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, you have a hope that will not disappoint, because God sustains your hope in love.

Application for Today

As I live today, I want to experience the Holy Spirit working in my life, and I want to feel even more the love of God in my heart.  I know that my hope will never disappoint me, because it rests upon the power of justification, and my peace with God. The Holy Spirit sustains my hope through God’s ever-present love in my heart.  I know God loves me, every day, no matter what.  Will your hope disappoint you, or will you rely upon the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit today?
