Eternal Security Explained from the Scriptures

People question their salvation for many reasons. People sometimes question their salvation after they have done terrible things. Other people question their salvation because they suddenly have doubts about their salvation. Sometimes people doubt their salvation because they were never born-again. Still other people hear other people teaching no eternal security. All born-gain believers should rest assured in salvation based upon the Scriptures.

Let me explain how to answer any question about eternal security.

  1. Definition of Eternal Security. Generally, people use the phrase “eternal security” to mean “once saved, always saved.” I will start with that meaning of “eternal security.”

  2. The Inspiration of the Bible. Regarding doctrine, such as eternal security, I accept the Scriptures as inspired by God and profitable for teaching and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16-17). “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Therefore, I look to the Bible for God’s answers to questions about eternal security.

  3. Salvation. God described salvation as being born from above, or born again (John 3:3).  “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3).’” Therefore, every born-again person became a new creature at the moment of salvation. Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation because God made us new creatures in Christ at the moment of salvation.

  4. New Creature. At the moment of salvation, God creates a new creature and all the old things have passed away (2 Corinthians 3:17). “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come” (2 Corinthians 3:17). Therefore, we are saved by God’s actions, not ours. Our good works cannot get us into salvation, and our bad works cannot get us out of salvation. Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation, because God willed our salvation; we did not will our salvation and we cannot undo what God did in saving us by an act of our will after we have been saved by God’s will.

  5. Salvation Never Includes Good Works.  We receive salvation as a free gift from God, not based upon any works we do (Ephesians 2:8-9). “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Therefore, our faith is a gift of God, along with the salvation it brings. Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation by doing bad works, because our salvation never rested upon doing good works.

  6. Saved People Continue To Sin. We were sinners at the moment of salvation and we continue to sin after salvation (1 John 1:8). “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8). Therefore, every born-again person will continue to sin after salvation. Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation because God has known all along He saved sinners who continue to sin after salvation.

  7. God Saved Us By His Will, Not Ours. God saved us, we never saved ourselves. He chose us for eternal life, by an act of His gracious and loving will, not our will (John 1:12-13).  “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation because God chose us while we were still sinners by an act of His will in choosing us, not by an act of our will.

  8. No Condemnation. God promised never to condemn believers (Romans 8:1). “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation because God promised never to condemn any believer after salvation. Jesus took all our condemnation at the cross. So, we rely upon God’s promise of no condemnation because Jesus died once for all our sins on the cross.

  9. Jesus Died Once for All Sins. Even though we continue to sin, God never condemns us for our sin because Jesus died for all our sins—past, present and future (Hebrews 7:27). “Who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself” (Hebrews 7:27). Therefore, all of our sins done over our lifetime on earth have been forgiven because Jesus died once for all of them. Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation because all of our sins were forgiven, once for all, by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

  10. Sealed for the Day of Redemption. At the moment of salvation, we were sealed by the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30). “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).” Therefore, we cannot lose our salvation because God sealed us for redemption and we cannot break the seal of God which He placed upon our lives until the future day of redemption.

I could easily cite many other verses supporting eternal security. Jesus loves us and died for all our sins, once for all. As the born-again children of God, Jesus and His Father cover us with Their hands, and no one is able to pluck us from those hands (John 10:28-29). Jesus said: “And I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29).

Do not believe me. Believe the Scriptures.

I hope these verses answer your question.

I have a question for you.

Why should Jesus let you into heaven?

I look forward to hearing from you.
