The Soul and Blood Atonement

Leviticus 17

  1. The Good Shepherd.  As the Good Shepherd, Jesus laid down His soul for the sheep (John 10:11). 1Jesus used the term “soul” (“ψυχὴν”) with the verb indicating Jesus purposefully laid down (“τίθησιν”–present active indicative) His soul for the sheep. In order to understand the concept of laying down His soul for the sheep, we must understand atonement for sins found in the blood in the soul.
  2. The Blood Atonement and the Soul. In Leviticus 17:11, God explained that soul of the flesh is in the blood. 2God wrote: “For soul (“נֶ֣פֶשׁ”–feminine singular construct) of the flesh (“הַבָּשָׂר֮”) in the blood is. God then revealed that He gave the blood to make atonement for “your souls.” God indicated that the blood is in the soul which will make atonement. We may draw three conclusions from the insights in Leviticus 17 regarding the flesh, soul, blood and atonement.

♦The soul is connected to the flesh.

♦ The soul of the flesh is in the blood.

♦ Atonement requires blood from the soul of the flesh.

♦ Jesus laid down His soul for the sheep, because atonement for sin requires

blood from the soul of the flesh.
