Father, Son, Holy Spirit: One God,

Three Divine Persons

Part Four

The Deity of Christ

Colossians 1:17, Page 1841

Have you ever thought about aliens coming to earth and what that might do to your faith?  I often hear news reports about some alien object coming, or some new life form discovered in the solar system, or evidence of life on a rock from outer space.  Jesus of Nazareth made claims about the entire universe.  One distinct claim concerned creation.  In no uncertain terms, Jesus claimed to be the Creator of all things, not just the things on earth, but also the heavens.  So we will read the Bible today to learn more about Jesus the Creator of all things.

Colossians 1:16, Page 1841

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things have been created through Him and for Him.”

The Creator of Heaven and Earth.  In Colossians 1:16, page 1841, Jesus described Himself as the Creator of both all things in heaven, and all things on earth.  He made a broad and sweeping claim.  He also expanded that claim to include all thrones, dominions, rulers and authorities–including those things in heaven.    You may recall that we saw a few days ago that the Father rescued us from the domain (“ἐξουσίας“) of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son (Colossians 1:13, page 1841).   In Colossians 1:16, page 1841, we see that Jesus created all dominions (“κυριότητες“) and authorities (“ἐξουσίαι“), and all thrones (“θρόνοι“) and rulers (“ἀρχαὶ“).    We know as believers from Ephesians 6:12, page 1834, that we do not struggle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers (“ἀρχάς“), powers (“ἐξουσίας“), world forces of this darkness (“τοὺς κοσμοκράτορας τοῦ σκότους τούτου“), and spiritual forces in the heavenly places (“τὰ πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις“).  Notice the similarity in description of the creation in Colossians and our spiritual enemies in Ephesians.  Jesus created all things, even the wicked for the day of evil (Proverbs 16:4, page 1024).  Not all spiritual forces in the heavenlies are evil, but some of them have fallen into sin and aligned themselves with Satan (Revelation 12:3-4, page 1927; compare Jude 6, page 1912; 1 Peter 2:4, page 1901).  Jesus created all things, not just all humans, plants and animals.  He created things we have never seen in the spiritual world, and things in the physical world beyond our present ability to see.  Notice here that through the power of Jesus Christ, we will triumph over all enemies, physical or spiritual, foreign or domestic, earthly or heavenly, all because Jesus made them and has dominion over all things as Creator.   We also get a glimpse into why Jesus created all things.

Colossians 1:17, Page 1841

“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Before All Things.   In Colossians 1:17, page 1841, we read words about Jesus that remind me of Genesis 1:1, page 1, and John 1: 1, page 1653, both of which speak about God “in the beginning.”  Jesus is before all things.  He was in the beginning.  He has no beginning, and no point of origin.  He is eternal, and has existed as God from eternity past.   Therefore, we read here that Jesus is before all things.

In Him All Things Hold Together.  We also read in Colossians 1:17, page 1841, that Jesus never abandoned His creation, but rather He holds all things together.  The entire universe exists “in Him.”  As we saw in the preceding verse, Colossians 1:16, page 1841, all things have been created through Jesus and for Jesus.  He remains essential to the existence of all things.  As Paul preached on Mars Hill, in the city of Athens, Paul preached that in Jesus “we live and move and exist,” for we are His children (Acts 17:1, page 1733).  As the great Creator God, Jesus wants to remind us that He created the entire universe, and any aliens that come here– well, He created all aliens, all planets, all suns, all moons, all comets, and you get the idea.  This same Creator said He holds all things together, and He existed before them, because He is God.  The creation itself clearly declares the His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, being clearly seen, being understood through what Christ has made, so that all men are without excuse (Romans 1:20, page 1759).    In a profound sense, every day Christ holds our lives together, in the midst of the universe He alone holds together.

So we learn more about the deity of Jesus today.

    ●  Jesus created the heavens and earth, and all that is in them.

    ●  Jesus is before all things, and has been, is now, and will always be God.

    ●  Jesus holds my life and everything else together, every day.

Application for Today

As I live today, I thank the Lord Jesus for creating all things.  I know that He holds all things together according to His power and purpose.  Within the universe, He knows all about me.  He has marvelous plans for my life.  Do you see Jesus holding your life together today?

 Christ Assembly Basics

Christ Assembly provides free access to various studies from the Bible, the Word of God. The studies in this website are not inspired, but God produced the Bible, consisting of sixty-nine books (39 Old Testament and 27 New Testament). The Holy Spirit inspired authors to produce original autographs of the Bible in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. Those original authors wrote over the course of many centuries. They wrote divinely inspired words and every word was divinely inspired. The authors communicated in their own styles, and with their own vocabulary, but God breathed out every word of the final autographs. The words in the Bible really matter, and deserve careful study.

As we study, we seek to love Jesus more because His word has instructed us so that we learn His ways. Eternal life consists in knowing God the Father, and Jesus Christ Whom God sent. As the eternal God of Glory, One with His Father, the Son of God took flesh and dwelt among us. Because of His death, He used His blood to purchase our redemption. He was raised for our justification. We now live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved us and gave Himself for us. By the grace of God, the Holy Spirit abides in every born-again believer and fills us with His presence and blessings. He leads us into all truth. Jesus is the truth, and the way, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Jesus, our Lord.

We look forward to His imminent return to the clouds of earth, to snatch away the believers alive on earth, so that we may be forever with the Lord. When He returns to the clouds, He will bring with Him all those people in Christ who died before His return to the clouds. We encourage one another with the promises of God, Who makes our path grow brighter and brighter, until the full light of day shines forth. We love Jesus and look forward to seeing Him soon. After Jesus removes the believers from the earth, then a terrible period of seven years follows where God brings measured and precise judgments upon the people alive on earth. God cut those days of  Tribulation short, or no flesh would have been saved. Jesus will then return to earth, slay His enemies, and place His feet on the Mount of Olives where He ascended to heaven. He will then reign on earth for a thousand years, and believers will reign with Him. After the Millennial Reign of Christ, all unbelievers will be judged at the Great White Throne Judgment, and they will suffer according to their deeds done on earth. They will be cast into the Lake of Fire, a place of torment night and day for eternity, because they never received the free gift of salvation while alive on earth. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God. Today we invite you to come and see Jesus, and learn from Him, for He is gentle and humble in heart. Take His yoke upon you, for His burden is easy and His yoke is light. He will give you rest for your soul as you trust Him. We receive salvation only from Jesus, by faith alone in Jesus, Who gives us the free gift of eternal life.

We accept the teaching of the Word of God. As born again believers, baptized by Jesus with the Holy Spirit, the anointing from God teaches us all things. We love to study the Word of God as we abide in Christ Jesus our Lord. God blesses all of us when we read His word, hear His word, and heed His word. We share original studies of the Word of God without cost and we do not receive donations. We support the finances of this ministry through private means, so that we are not a burden to anyone. We oppose charging people to read books, articles, journals or other studies of the Word of God. Such work should be supported by donations, but not in prescribed amounts and not as a requirement to gain access to what God has freely provided. What God has freely given, we should freely share. Just as Paul worked making tents, so we work to support this ministry.
