 The Miracle of Inspiration

Part Four

The Truthfulness of the

Words of Scripture

Verbal inspiration means the exact words of Scripture are true.  We have seen that God chose each word of Scripture carefully, so that the author would communicate the truth with precision. Verbal inspiration does not mean a dictation theory of inspiration, where the author merely writes down what God spoke.  Rather, verbal inspiration means that each writer communicated using his own style of writing, vocabulary, and syntax.  Peter writes in a style different from John or Paul.  Yet, God guaranteed that what each of the wrote perfectly communicated His message, with word for word accuracy.  The writers of Scripture did not always say they were communicating the exact words of Jesus, or of other people.  In some cases, they used paraphrases or summaries of the words.  But when they did claim to report the very words of Jesus, they reported the exact words that Jesus spoke.  In fact, each time the Bible writer claims to report the very words of someone, then the words are exactly as reported. Through the words of Scripture we learn the revelation of God.  The revelation will be no clearer than the precision of the words used to communicate it.  Therefore, we must pay close attention to the words of Scripture.  Some people may argue that only the thoughts of Scripture count, and not the very words.  Jesus stressed that the words themselves really matter, because the words communicate the truth and revelation of God to man.  God always speaks clearly and precisely.  He says what He means, and means what He says.

2 Samuel 23:2, Page 534

“The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue.”

His Word On My Tongue.  God spoke His word through the prophets of the Old Testament and also through various individuals. King David also prophesied, and his last words were recorded in 2 Samuel 23:2, page 534.  He died with the words of God on His tongue, with the Spirit of the LORD speaking through Him (see also Jeremiah 1:9, page 1177–“Then the Lord stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, ‘Behold, I have put My words in your mouth'”).   In the New Testament, God provides many examples of believers speaking through the power of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus specifically commanded His disciples not to worry about what they were to say when persecuted, because the Holy Spirit would speak through them, and provide the very words they were to say (Matthew 10:19-20, page 1516; Mark 13:11, page 1584; Luke 21:13-15, page 1543).  God gave His messengers the words to speak, and He intended for them to communicate the entire message.

Jeremiah 26:2, Page 1227

“Thus says the LORD, ‘Stand in the court of the LORD’S house, and speak to all the cities of Judah who have come to worship in the LORD’S house all the words that I have commanded you to speak to them.  Do not omit a word!”

Do Not Omit a Word.  In Jeremiah 26:2, page 1227, we read that Jeremiah received specific instructions from the Lord.  Often in Jeremiah, we see that God describes His prophetic message to a prophet as the “word of the LORD” (“דְּבַר-יְהוָה“).  But in Jeremiah 26:2, page 1227, we see that God also could very precise concerning His prophecy.  He meant there that He gave Jeremiah specific words to give to His people.  God intended to use the prophet Jeremiah, and all the other prophets, to turn the people of Judah from their evil ways, but they had not listened (Jeremiah 26:1-6, page 1227).  Every word counted for Jeremiah and the other prophets.

Jeremiah 42:4, Page 1258

“Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, ‘I have heard you.  Behold, I am going to pray to the LORD your God in accordance with your words; and I will tell you the whole message which the LORD will answer you.  I will not keep back a word from you.'”

Do Not Keep Back a Word.       Later in Jeremiah 42:4, page 1258, we see that Jeremiah communicated the exact words of the LORD to the people.  He would not keep back a single word from them.  We see from this passage that God gave very specific words.  Notice that Jeremiah understood the LORD to speak with word for word accuracy.  God also required prophets to speak His word with truth.  He said that His word was like fire and “like a hammer that shatters rock” (Jeremiah 23:28-29, page 1222-1223).  Not only do the Words of God burn and shatter, they also benefit the believer.

Proverbs 30:5, Page1045

“Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.'”

Every Word of God Tested.   Scripture records for our benefit that every word of God is tested.  God links His word to believers taking refuge in Him and of His Person acting as a shield for us.  As God provides a refuge for us, He also provides food for us from His Word.

Matthew 4:4, Page 1505

But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.”‘”

Living on Every Word of God.   As Jesus confronted Satan, Jesus quoted the Old Testament.  He relied upon Scripture to refute the lies of Satan.  In Matthew 4:4, page 1505, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, page 300, and made the point that every word of God provides spiritual food for man to live upon.  While men think about earthly bread, Jesus speaks of the Word of God as the only thing He needs to eat.  Jesus did not command the stones to become bread, as Satan had challenged Him.  Instead, Jesus quoted the Deuteronomy as a sufficient response to Satan.  Jesus had no intention of taking His orders from Satan, but rather emphasized how God provided every kind of food essential for living.  Jesus declared that every letter and the smallest parts of the word of God would be fulfilled.

Matthew 5:18, Page 1507

For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

The Smallest Letter or Stroke.   In Matthew 5:18, page 1507, Jesus also a confidence in the words of Old Testament.  He speaks of them with precise details.  Jesus says that not only the words were inspired, but even the smallest letter or strokes (“yod”) would not pass from the Law until all is accomplished.   Jesus taught that He did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfill (Matthew 5:17, page 1507).  In this context, Jesus proclaimed that  the smallest letter or stroke would be accomplished.   We should follow Jesus in everything, and especially rely upon the spiritual truth and integrity of the words He gave to us as recorded in the Bible.

So we learn about the inspiration of the Word of God today.

    ●  The Word of God means that God communicated through men who spoke for Him.

     ●  The Word of God means that God gave specific words to the authors of the Bible, and not just gave them general messages.

       ●  The Word of God means that He inspired every letter and stroke of the letters.  In Hebrew, ones stroke of the pen could change one letter and so change one word.  God gave extremely precise words to the authors of the Bible, even down to the letters and the strokes of the words.

Application for Today

We take refuge in the Word of God, knowing that God communicated with us to bless us and to save us from our sins.  Through His Word, we live and draw near to Him.  Will you listen to every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, and so live in God today?

 Christ Assembly Basics

Christ Assembly provides free access to various studies from the Bible, the Word of God. The studies in this website are not inspired, but God produced the Bible, consisting of sixty-nine books (39 Old Testament and 27 New Testament). The Holy Spirit inspired authors to produce original autographs of the Bible in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. Those original authors wrote over the course of many centuries. They wrote divinely inspired words and every word was divinely inspired. The authors communicated in their own styles, and with their own vocabulary, but God breathed out every word of the final autographs. The words in the Bible really matter, and deserve careful study.

As we study, we seek to love Jesus more because His word has instructed us so that we learn His ways. Eternal life consists in knowing God the Father, and Jesus Christ Whom God sent. As the eternal God of Glory, One with His Father, the Son of God took flesh and dwelt among us. Because of His death, He used His blood to purchase our redemption. He was raised for our justification. We now live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved us and gave Himself for us. By the grace of God, the Holy Spirit abides in every born-again believer and fills us with His presence and blessings. He leads us into all truth. Jesus is the truth, and the way, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Jesus, our Lord.

We look forward to His imminent return to the clouds of earth, to snatch away the believers alive on earth, so that we may be forever with the Lord. When He returns to the clouds, He will bring with Him all those people in Christ who died before His return to the clouds. We encourage one another with the promises of God, Who makes our path grow brighter and brighter, until the full light of day shines forth. We love Jesus and look forward to seeing Him soon. After Jesus removes the believers from the earth, then a terrible period of seven years follows where God brings measured and precise judgments upon the people alive on earth. God cut those days of  Tribulation short, or no flesh would have been saved. Jesus will then return to earth, slay His enemies, and place His feet on the Mount of Olives where He ascended to heaven. He will then reign on earth for a thousand years, and believers will reign with Him. After the Millennial Reign of Christ, all unbelievers will be judged at the Great White Throne Judgment, and they will suffer according to their deeds done on earth. They will be cast into the Lake of Fire, a place of torment night and day for eternity, because they never received the free gift of salvation while alive on earth. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God. Today we invite you to come and see Jesus, and learn from Him, for He is gentle and humble in heart. Take His yoke upon you, for His burden is easy and His yoke is light. He will give you rest for your soul as you trust Him. We receive salvation only from Jesus, by faith alone in Jesus, Who gives us the free gift of eternal life.

We accept the teaching of the Word of God. As born again believers, baptized by Jesus with the Holy Spirit, the anointing from God teaches us all things. We love to study the Word of God as we abide in Christ Jesus our Lord. God blesses all of us when we read His word, hear His word, and heed His word. We share original studies of the Word of God without cost and we do not receive donations. We support the finances of this ministry through private means, so that we are not a burden to anyone. We oppose charging people to read books, articles, journals or other studies of the Word of God. Such work should be supported by donations, but not in prescribed amounts and not as a requirement to gain access to what God has freely provided. What God has freely given, we should freely share. Just as Paul worked making tents, so we work to support this ministry.
